El camino a SudAfrica

Trip began on June 7th around 5 PM CST. Aimee, Valeria and Gerardo drove to Houston to sleep for the night so next day we could catch our first plane to DC and from there to SouthAfrica.

The drive was nice over 71 east. We hit I-10 and from there to Houston. For lack of better Judgment, I decided to listen to my GPS. This wonderful system took us to a few road that I had never seen or heard of in Houton. Lots of these new roads appeared to be in places where they could steal your tires in two minutes if you dont pay attention.

I can tell Aimee was getting anxious and little bit scared of not being able to see the end of our road. I decided to stop at a gas stattion and asked for directions. Turns out we were right all alone, but the difference was that the GPS tooks to the neighbord roads instead of the highway, but we were going on the right direction. Stupid GPS.

We got to the hotel, Marriot IAH somewhere around 8 PM. Aimee and Valeria went up to the room to refresh and I went to park the car. People at this hotel not very friendly. In fact, I have to say that it seem as if it was too much an effort to be nice and friendly to customers. It could be that they were tired.

Anyhow, we slept fine that night and woke up early in the morning. Gerardo took off first to leave the car at one of those long term parkings, the park spot. Aimee bathed Valeria and both dressed up to kill.

We met at the breakfat room, ate and cheked out of the hotel. We took the train to our airline gates. Valeria loved the train ride. She was very excited on it.

As far as the flights, I have to apploud Valeria for being such a trooper She behaved excellent.  The first flight lasted close to three hours. The next flight lasted close to 17 hours. That flight had a stop in Dakar to recharge gas(or whatever is the technicall name for plane fuel) for the plane. The second plan DC to Johanneburg was about 80% fulll of Mexicans who travelled to the world cup. It was fun being there.

We arrived to Johanneburg somewhere around 6 PM. We passed inmigration. The person there was very friendly with Vale. He was making her laughed quite a bit. As soon as we exit the ariport, the party started with tons of Mexicans there partying with their flags and customs. There were a few mariachis singing. I left Aimee and Valeria to watch the spectacle so I could go get my tickets. Got my ticket and left to the airport.

Hotel was not as expected, based on the pictures provided, but it is not bad at all. We are looking forward to start our journey tomorrow around the city.

Here are some pictures of these past two days...

Well, connection is sort of slow so pictures to come in later...

Here are somethings we are considering to visit in Johannesburg...

48 Hours in Johannesburg

In South Africa, there is an old saying which says: "Life starts and ends in Johannesburg, the city of gold and happiness."

In keeping with this sentiment, Johannesburg is situated right in the very heart of South Africa, and because of its central position it draws many people together, creating a thrilling city in which many different cultures mix, producing a delightfully varied experience for any tourist.

Spend the morning enjoying a fine breakfast at Melrose Arch, just five minutes from Sandton. After visiting local treasures like Rosebank Craft and Arts Market, take a drive eastwards to the Alexander township and later Midrand. When there, look for the popular ‘braai place' (locals refer to it here as Tshisa Nyama) where you will be served with indigenous delicacies.

After lunch, flex your wallets and head to Sandton Towers, the best shopping centre in the city and treat yourself (or the ones you love) to some well-deserved gifts. Or if the theatre is more to your taste then the Market Theatre in the heart of the city is something not to be missed, which showcases a wide variety of different performances.

As night falls it would be a great shame not to experience the popular nightclub Taboo, a favourite of tourists and locals alike, where dancing is a must.
If the more historical side to Johannesburg interests you, then you might want to use your second day in the city to learn more about it and there are plenty of resources at hand.

Constitutional Hill is the best place to start and from there the Apartheid Museum, a vital storehouse for evidence of the struggles which led to Johannesburg developing into the wonderful city we know today.

The township of Soweto should feature somewhere in your plan for the day, just a short drive out of Johannesburg, where you can taste more delicious traditional food in countless restaurants.

Once full, you should find the time to visit Vilakazi Street, the former home of Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, another source of celebrated heritage which it would be a shame to miss out on.

If you have any energy left after all that, at nightfall take the opportunity to have some more fun by visiting Afrodisiac and Voodoo Lounge!

5 Cool things of Johannesburg

Guided Tour of SowetoSoweto is the biggest township in South Africa and during the apartheid era it gained international acclaim for housing most of the country's revolutionaries. Former Robben Island prisoner Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu lived on the famous Vilakazi street.
Apartheid MuseumThe Apartheid Museum is where much of South Africa's history is kept on display. Historically, this museum is one of the most celebrated places in the country due to the significance of its educational and thought-provoking contents.
Walter Sisulu SquareThis square is dedicated to Walter Sisulu, an icon who fought vigorously against the apartheid system in South Africa. He spent many years in Robben Island, a notorious location used to imprison political activists in the old South Africa.
Hector Peterson SquareHector Peterson is said to be the first person to be shot during the famous 16 June 1976 student riots in Soweto, where state police used live ammunition against students who were protesting against the use of Afrikaans as a language of instruction. At the time of the incident, a picture of the 14-year-old Peterson was shown all over the world, prompting international outrage and condemnation.
Tour of Constitution HillThis site is where the first constitution of the democratic South Africa was crafted. It is one of the country's most celebrated locations and has hosted numerous conferences and events of historical significance.

48 Hours in CapeTown

When you're spoiled for choice, where do you start? In truth, a tour around Cape Town in just 48 hours would merely scratch the surface of a hugely diverse city that offers such a wide variety of attractions.
In the morning, it's worth taking a walk to V&A Waterfront for a Cape Town shopping experience. Another popular shopping spot for Capetonians are the city's markets, where plenty of bargains are to be had. Then, in the afternoon, you could take a boat ride and visit the world-renowned Robben Island to learn more about the history of South Africa. It is here that many of the country's most celebrated icons, including Nelson Mandela, OR Tambo and Water Sisulu, were imprisoned.
On your way back, time-permitting, try to make your way to the famous Table Mountain for an unforgettable view of Cape Town. In the evening, make your way down to Long Street and savour the dazzling array of restaurants and night life. To finish the night off in style, you could also make your way down to Long Street where there is a variety of clubs.
The second day should be fun as it will introduce you to another side of Cape Town: township life. Township tours are the best way to enjoy this experience. The first stop should be the Langa township. You will find places like Radebe Restaurant, Tiger's Place, Lalapha and many other places that offer breakfast specially prepared, the African way.
Afterwards, you could take a drive to the nearby township known as Gugulethu (loosely translated as ‘our pride'). Gugulethu was at the heart of anti-apartheid activities during the long struggle in South Africa. Around midday, look for the popular Mzoli braai place (barbeque) and sample some Umngqusho Nenyama (samp and beans with stew). Tt is one of the hang-out spots for many Capetonians, some of whom drive all the way from the suburbs to indulge in the delicious meat and Xhosa cuisine. This tour of the townships could conclude with a visit to Khayelitsha, another centre of considerable historical significance in South Africa.
On your way back, it's well worth making a stop at the famous Cape Flats, where players like Benni McCarthy and Quinton Fortune were born. As the sun sets, it's time to return to the city, where The Assembly's menu of live music and international bands and DJs and Fiction's late-night parties will keep entertained into the wee small hours.
Other places worth visiting include Hout Bay, Camps Bay, Cape Point, to mention just a few.

5 Cool things of CapeTown

Table Mountain
Almost everyone who visits Cape Town wants to see the much-talked about and acclaimed Table Mountain and the explanation to that inquisitiveness is simple - the Table Mountain is one of the places that provide a rare yet breath-taking view to nature and the artisan of one of South Africa's most profiled city, Cape Town. The few minutes you are likely to spend at the top of this majestic mountain makes the hype about this place all justified.
The most popular activity for the visitors is often the ride to the top through the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. Once at the summit, there are a number of short walks that you can take, including the Dassie Walk, the Agama Walk (a popular route that gives you 360-degree views of Cape Town and Cape Peninsula) and the Klipspringer Walk. You can also choose to spend the better part of a day hiking all the way along the top of the mountain.

V&A Waterfront
The sea and the sunny summer weather are often the main areas of attraction about Cape Town, however one of the places often renowned for its beauty and historical significance to many is the V&A Waterfront on the sea shores of Cape Town. The Waterfront is situated few kilometres from the Green Point Stadium and is likely to be one of the main attractions for visitors who visit the Mother City during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
It is one of the popular destination for it offers a number of things including shops, restaurants, nightspots, tourist attractions and museums in the city's historic harbour that attracts millions of visitor's a year and for good reason. Situated in the heart of the Mother City's working harbour and set against the spectacular backdrop of Table Mountain, the Waterfront perfectly positioned for visitors. There are lots of activities ranging from helicopter flips to boat charters and relaxed harbour cruises (walk along the water's edge and pick one - there are several options), or browse through some of the hundreds of shopping outlets ranging from larger department stores selling designer labels down to boutique jewellery and curio shops selling local arts and crafts.

Robben Island
A boat ride to Robben Island is one of the ‘must' do for anyone who wants to explore the historical context of South Africa and visit a place many in South Africa believe represents hope, triumph and freedom. While the Island was discovered over a century ago, it shot into international arena as a prison where political activists in South Africa were imprisoned. It is here that some of the country's struggle heroes like Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki and many others were imprisoned for many years for their refusal to embrace the apartheid system. The island is situated about seven kilometres from Cape town. While this cannot be independently verified, it is often said that the first prisoner to be sent to Robben Island was Makanda Nxele, whom later historians claimed he tried to pull an unsuccessful escape only to drawn in the shores of Table Bay.
After apartheid was abolished in South Africa, Robben Island was turned into a tourist destination and has since been one of the main attraction for visitors from all over the world who flock in the Island in huge numbers to enjoy the rare natural vegetation that parades the streets of Robben Island.

Cape Point
Capetonians often rave about the city's ability to offer diversity to the eye and many options to the visitors. The Cape Point provides a unique spectacle of the city and can also be classified as one of the places one has to see before leaving Cape Town. Plan a picnic in the park or on the beach, hike or mountain bike ride, have lunch in the upmarket Two Oceans Restaurant high above the crashing waves of False Bay, or simply catch the funicular to a point where you need only do a short walk to a lookout point over the Atlantic Ocean. Here, apart from the spectacular view out over the point and sea, you'll be able to see the most powerful lighthouse on the South African coast, which steers ships through a perilous passage around the point which over the centuries has seen the end of many.

Constantia Vineyards
In South Africa, the Western Cape Province is renowned for being home to some of the finest wine estates in the country. And, it is therefore apt to say that the journey to Cape Town might be described as incomplete if one does not take time to explore and indulge on some good wines and explore the landscape of the places that produces it.
One such place is the Constantia Vineyards - home to some of the oldest winelands in the Cape and restaurants. Lined with oak trees and gabled Cape Dutch homesteads, Constantia is a pretty suburb situated on the lower slopes of Table Mountain. The winelands began in 1685 on the farm of the governor of the Cape Colony at the time, Simon van der Stel.
Having chosen an enormous tract of farmland for himself and his family, Van der Stel named his estate Constancia after his daughter.

 48 Hours in Polokwane

Although lacking the global appeal of Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban, you will discover that there is more than meets the eye to Polokwane, situated in the Limpopo Province. It is a great place to relax while enjoying the best that nature has to offer, and a great base from which to explore other African countries, such as Botswana and Zimbabwe.
In the morning, you can make your way to the city centre to some of the malls in the main Thabo Mbeki Street and get some breakfast. Afterwards, visit the calm Lake Fundudzi and the Thathe Vondo Forest. Thathe is an indigenous forest which is sacred to the Venda people. Take a drive north of the town to the rural villages nearby to experience the Venda culture. As night-time reckons, make your way down to the Meropa Casino and Entertainment World which is situated only five kilometres away from the city.
The second day should be about exploring and experiencing new things. Go to the city centre to some restaurants there where you will be spoiled with a variety of choices in some magnificent eating places. Afterwards, spend some time shopping. As midday approaches, it's time to get out of town and embark on a journey of exploration and adventure.
A must see place is the Ndebele Village. Once you are there, spend sometime with them and learn more about their fascinating culture and customs. Enjoy lunch in the village. As evening dawns, make your way to the Jembe Tavern for an opportunity to mingle with locals and learn more about this place. And, while you are there - dance till sunrise!

5 Cool things of Polokwane

Makapan's Cave
One of the major tourist attractions in the area is Makapan's Cave, which is located in Mokopane in Limpopo Province. Visitors should not miss the opportunity to visit the caves where extensive cultural deposits have played a crucial role in furthering our understanding of human evolution and the appearance of modern man. The Cave of Hearths is one of only two Stone Age sites in the world that contain an unbroken sequence of artefacts from the Earlier Stone Age to the Later Stone Age. The Cave of Gwasa, one of the historic caves in Limpopo, was a site of repeated refuge from conflicts, and was later renamed as Makapan's Cave after the great chief Makapan. Visits to the fascinating Makapan's Valley must be arranged in advance by contacting the Mogalakwena Bushveld Community Tourism Association.

Meropa Casino and Enterntainment
Meropa Casino and Entertainment World is situated in the Limpopo Province, only five kilometres from Polokwane. The Meropa Casino and Entertainment world has a separate conference centre, which caters for a wide range of events ranging from fashion shows, product launches and conferences and a cinema. The casino is of upmarket design, with modern technology employed throughout.

Jembe Tavern
Made popular during the apartheid regime in the townships, taverns are some of the most popular places in the townships of South Africa. And, when you are in Polokwane, the Jembe Tarven is certainly the place to be. After a long day of working hard or travelling, you need a place to relax and unwind. Jembe Tavern is popular with young and old alike and hosts popular bands, karaoke evenings and comedians for those socialists looking for fun-filled, foot-tapping evenings. Join hands with the locals and spoil yourself!

Ndebele Village
The Ndebele culture is one of the most fascinating in South Africa. And, if you visit Polokwane, this will be an ideal time to make your way to the Ndebele village. Ndebele (isiNdebele) is one of the 11 official languages in South Africa. Ndebele women traditionally adorn themselves with a variety of ornaments, each symbolising their status in society. After marriage dresses became more elaborate. The Ndebele have always been known for their artistic skills. Apart from its aesthetic appeal, it has a cultural significance that serves to reinforce the distinctive Ndebele identity. The skill of the Ndebele has always resided in their ability to combine exterior sources of stimulation with traditional design concepts taken from their ancestors.
Although painting was done freehand, without prior layouts, the art always displayed a linear quality reflective of their environment. Ndebele women were responsible for painting the colourful and intricate patterns on the walls of their houses. This presented the traditionally subordinate wife with an opportunity to express her individuality and self-worth. The Ndebele are further characterised by their intricate beadwork - a time-consuming craft which requires a deft hand and good eyesight.

Lake Funduzi and Thathe Vondo Forest

Locals refer to Lake Funduzi as a place of ‘peace and tranquillity'. And, once you are there, it does not take long before you realise why people from around the area give rave ratings. Lake Funduzi is a magical place that is steeped in Venda mythology and legend. Its condition changes seasonally, but it is always worth the visit from a cultural perspective. From Lake Funduzi you will drive along the very top of the Soutpansberg.
Thathe is an indigenous forest which is sacred to the Venda people. Here look out for forest species such as Chorister Robin-Chat, White-starred Robin, Knysna Turaco, Yellow-streaked Greenbul and Orange Ground-Thrush

48 Hours in Rustenburg

Initially, you could be forgiven for not crediting Rustenburg with the best social offerings for an eager tourist, but don't be fooled. There is more to this city than meets the eye.
While the majestic Sun City is clearly a must-see destination, if you look beyond the obvious, its mountainous landscape is a joy to experience.
After breakfast, take a drive to Hartebeesport where you can start your day in a truly refreshing, meditative appreciation of nature as the sun rises.
At midday, after dining in one of the city's popular eateries, such as News Cafe or The Fish Inn, you can take a walk to the Paul Kruger Museum and take some time to learn about the history of the area [Rustenburg is the third oldest city in north west South Africa].
Once the night falls, prepare to party in true African style. Instead of spending time in nightclubs, why not venture in more traditional taverns in which you can treat yourself to authentic African cuisine and not least of all experience the wonderful company of the locals? Some of the best places include Mike's Tavern, Joe's Taverns, Lucky's Tavern and Ivory Pot.
Before you know it, your first day will be over, and the next set to begin, and it will be a challenge to fit all the exciting possibilities into such a short timeframe.
If you don't have time to travel to the Platinum mines, a key fixture in Rustenburg's history and currently processing 70 per cent of the world's platinum, then take this day to visit Predator's World. Afterwards, time permitting of course, take 15 minutes to drive to the breathtaking Sun City to enjoy the finest sights that nature has to offer.

5 Cool things of Rustenburg

Sun CityDeep in the rugged bushveld, in the heart of an ancient volcano, lies the world's most unique resort, the internationally acclaimed Sun City. The resort has a unique heartbeat and an African rhythm of its own and is unlike any other destination in the world Sun City Resort is set in the stark ruggedness of the north west Region of South Africa, and is surrounded by mountains and the untamed majesty of the African landscape.
Valley Of The WavesOvernight visitors to any of the hotels at the Sun City Resort have free access to the Valley of the Waves. This is the most advanced water park in South Africa. A large lagoon dominates the scene with a wave machine capable of generating 1.8 metre waves every 90 seconds. This water park has five exhilarating flume rides. From the aptly named ‘Temple of Courage' swimmers drop a heart stopping 17 metres down a chute and under a bridge before splashing into a small pool at the foot of the slide. The less adventurous visitor to Sun City can take a ride on the 'Lazy River'.
Rustenburg Nature ReserveThe Rustenburg Nature Reserve lies at the western end of the Magaliesberg Protected Natural Environment, about 100 km from Pretoria and Johannesburg. Originally established on the farm Rietvallei which once belonged to President Paul Kruger, it has been gradually expanded over the years and now covers some 4500 hectares. The Rustenburg Nature Reserve is dominated by the rocky ridges of the Magaliesberg, with well-wooded ravines on the rugged slopes. A large valley basin and an extensive plateau form an important water catchment area from which the main watercourse flows into a large, reed-filled marsh.
Pilanesburg Nature ResortThe Pilanesberg National Park, which covers some 55,000 hectares, is the fourth largest in southern Africa. The history of Pilanesberg National Park is also unique amongst national parks in South Africa, as its rugged landscape, well-watered valleys and attractive dwelling sites have made it a preferred site for human settlement for thousands of years. Prior to its proclamation as a reserve in 1979, the Pilanesberg National Park Complex was degraded and depleted of indigenous wildlife populations due to fairly intense settlement by commercial farmers.
Gary Player Golf CourseNamed after one of the finest golf players South Africa has ever produced, the Gary Player Golf Course is ranked as one of the best golf course in South Africa. It is arguably the most famous course in South Africa. The Gary Player Country Club is acknowledged as a difficult and demanding course. Since 1981 it has been home to the Nedbank Million Dollar Golf Challenge. The comparatively flat nature of the golf course is misleading: water hazards, cunningly sited bunkers and pins hidden away on kidney shaped greens makes up for its lack of gradient.

The decision...

January of this year, I received notification that I had won tickets to the world cup. I bought 4 tickets for each one of the games that Mexico is playing on the first section of the tournament.

First Game:
Opening Game Mexico vs SoutAfrica

Second Game:
Mexico vs France

Third Game:
Mexico vs Uruguay.

The main reason why I bought four tickets is because I needed three (Aimee, Valeria y Gerardo) and the fourth one is just in case I could sell it over there and try to make a little bit of money back.

I was almost sure that I was not going to win tickets to the games dues that I'd never win them in the past. Yet, this time was different. I got my email confirmation that my credit card had been charged for the games purchased and I recently received in the email the document that grantees me my tickets for all the games.

Here is a picture of the document i received...

Stay in touch, as i will update the itinerary of the trip and the amazing places and stadiums we will be visiting.

Thank you

Welcome

Here it is, we are twenty something days from the start of a new football WORLD CUP. This time is going to be in SouthAfrica, year 2010. This time around I really did not think we were going to to go due to a few personal family problems. Also, Aimee and I were/are concern about the security in South Africa in regards to our beautiful daughter. There has been a lot of news throughout the years about the security of SouthAfrica being simply bad, corrupted and bottom line horrible.

Yet, the thought process of us deciding to go was that if FIFA is comfortable enough to allow fans to travel to SouthAfrica, then it is probably safe and worth going. I clearly remember FIFA or CONMEBOL canceling a Copa America in Colombia due to security somewhere in the 90s. Therefore, I believe if there was a security concern to FIFA, they would have stopped the event in this country. Also, this time around we are traveling with a different mood. We are going to be doing lots  of TOURS to make sure we are not wondering on the streets lost looking for something. This is definitely different as how we have traveled in the past but we feel it is a safer travel approach.

Anyhow, this will be the third world cup that Aimee and I travel together to. We went to Japan/SouthKorea in 2002. Then, we went to Germany 2006 (you can read from our experience in Germany here, notes and pics). Now, we are all set to travel to SouthAfrica for our third world cup together.

We are going to be using this site to capture our little moments on this new adventure. There will be notes, pictures and whatever comes to mind.

We want to share this experience with all of our friends and family members, so stay in touch and you are welcome to come back as much as you want.

More to come soon...
